“For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”
Traveling on a budget this season? Unfortunately, buying the cheapest ticket these days also means you’ll have to do without many of the amenities that have traditionally been considered obligatory in modern air travel.
At the top of that list is carry-on luggage. When you purchase a Basic-economy ticket, you are allowed to bring a personal item on board as long as it fits underneath the seat. This means that any luggage that requires overhead bin space has been banned. Fortunately you can be a savvy and stylish traveler with Little Packrats’ Round Top Totes.
These bags may be easy on the eyes but they are tough as nails. Made in the USA from sturdy, weather-resistant, nylon pack cloth, they check-in at 18 inch wide x 12 inch high x 6 inch deep. Their generous bowling-style shape carries clothes and toys for an overnight stay at Grandma’s or essential travel items for a weekend away (or if you pack light, a week long jaunt). In addition to being the perfect airplane carry-on that fits under most seats, it also doubles as a workout bag or sports bag. Soft seat belt style straps fit comfortably over your shoulder.
“Basic Economy” fares are already in place at United and American— a new class of service most easily explained as “you get a seat and that’s it”. Other airlines are sure to follow suit soon. And even if your airline of choice this holiday season doesn’t restrict your ticket, you may want to travel without the hassle of clamoring for overhead bin space.
We’ve compiled this chart of the major airlines to show the under seat storage dimensions. This is simply a guide and you should double-check with your airline to insure your carry-on will fit.
*According to measurements available online, Jet Blue and West Jet may restrict this bag from fitting under the seat, however I have stashed it several times under seats on Jet Blue flights. Since its soft-sided it will compress a bit.
“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.”
The basic-economy ticket does have its advantages though. When you store your carry on under the seat you don’t need to stress about the availability of overhead bin space. Your under seat area is always free! You just need to make sure you have a bag that is going to fit the space and your style!
